Think of a Word document, lots of different fonts and lots of pictures. It may look nice and be very appealing. This same document could also have been made by an html editor. This pages have images, animated images, videos, flash movies and scripts that run your web browser such as making something change when you put your mouse over it. All the required codes are on a document and when you request a page from the browser, the web server sends a copy of the page with the associated images, movies and sound files to your browser. The disadvantage with flat web sites is that they have no power. Just like a word document, they cannot change. For example, if the prices of your products change in your business, you will have to re-hire the web developer to change the page and re-upload a new copy of that page to the web server. That is the reason why I have specialized in the dynamic web development where the details are in a database, which the owner can manipulate and instantly the web site changes. The way dynamic web sites work is that the pages actually do not exist on the server, but it is software, which the developer has written. Every time a viewer request a page, the software on the web server asks the database for details and build a page on the server. It then sends the page to the viewer and discards it. Most of our web sites are static and dynamic, however we prefer and specialize in dynamic web development as we can give our client absolute control and the user absolute power of what exactly it is they want to get information on. Dynamic web sites also provide you with web services. This is a powerful tool. They can provide your office software or web site with data from another web site and can tie all your application together. Most Cairns Multimedia Web developers do not have the skill to write dynamic software for the Internet, or they use an old programming language (which is not in the new ASP.NET) and are consequently inefficient and expensive. Because we have moved into the new ASP.NET area we can build dynamic sites for the same price while other developers write static sites only.
MULTIMEDIA SUCH AS IMAGES, FLASH AND VIDEO MOVIES, SOUND FILES...
Yes, we also create Multimedia! As we build web sites and your web site is the entrance door to multimedia, your site has to look great. For example they are: Photography and Image editing. Images made by photographs or retrieved by other means are generally unsuitable for the Internet, and hence need to be edited. They must be of the correct type and the file size must be low to reduce the time it takes to down load your web site. They must also be of the correct physical size and appearance. They might also have to be transparent (the back ground coming through, so that the image does not appear to be an image but an object as part of your page. Animated Images They are gif images and they are moving or changing on the screen. They me be of great file size, hence Macromedia Flash would be a better idea. Macromedia Flash Movies They are similar to animated images, but there file size is lower and hence the download time for your web page. Also they can include synchronized sound. They only nag with Flash Movies is, that Flash does not come with the Browser software but from Macromedia. Basically it means, that if you have a new computer or just installed a new operating system, the first time you come to a site that uses Flash, you will be prompted to download and install Flash onto your computer. Even though this is a very straight forward and simple and quick process, some of my clients did not like this idea. But even the most sophisticated sites on the Internet use Flash as a good alternative. The plug in of videos We can plug in video files but one has to consider the large file size of those files. The plug in of sound files We can plug in sound, one however has to consider the large file size and consequent download time. That is where Flash with sound has the advantage.
ABOUT DOWN LOAD TIME...
At the section above, I mentioned the disadvantage with down load time. The real problem with download time is not caused by web applications but by the fact that Australia is behind many other developed counties and still uses the ordinary phone lines, modems and dial up connections. The old phone lines were not designed for the Internet and are very slow. Our web sites are built with this in mind, and hence file sizes of multimedia are an important issue to us when it comes to web development.
